Why Circadian Medicine?

In 2017, the nobel prize in medicine was awarded for “discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythms." Circadian medicine is when we align ourselves to the light dark cycles which affects digestion, sleep, hormone production, cardiac function, innate immunity, neurophysiology, body temp, activity and rest. Not being aligned to these rhythms can leads to depression, anxiety, obesity, diabetes, bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder and a long list of chronic inflammatory illnesses.

Ayurveda has practiced using the natural rhythms of the day to create ease and flow in our lives. There are three doshas in Ayurveda and each one dominates certain times of the day. Vata (air/ether), Pitta (fire/water) and Kapha (earth/water).

Vata is dominant during 2-6 am/pm and is the time of creativity, mental work, energy is rapid and dispersed.

Pitta governs 10-2 am/pm and is fire. The energy is ascending, it is metabolism and transformation.

Kapha rules the time from 6-10 am/pm and is a descending, connecting, unctuous, loving.

By learning to framework our day around these energies we can learn to work with the qualities and cues nature is providing for us, instead of constantly feeling tired, overwhelmed and anxious..

With a bit of effort and awareness, we can shift to going to bed earlier in Kapha time, eating in Pitta time, and thinking in Vata time allowing flow and ease into our day.
